Global energy security and Europe’s supply crisis

Energy security and supply reliability have rarely been in more focus than they are now.  Europe, in particular, is facing a maelstrom of events ranging from progressive energy transition policies that are now in question, to the Russian aggression in Ukraine that is significantly disrupting global supply chains and even threatening 50 years of geopolitical stability.  As the Ukraine crisis continues and given the economic reality of the world today, how will Western Europe adapt ?  Can it afford to continue to lead in the energy transition?  Can it achieve independence from Russian gas?  Where are the new, more reliable sources of energy?  With such a volatile situation, what will the landscape look like 6 and 12 months from now?  This panel will discuss the potential pathways Europe can take and what energy security means for Europe in this new, highly uncertain world.

The discussion will cover

The circumstances that led to today:
  • The energy transition and Europe’s leading role to date
  • Policy trends and recent political and societal pressures

The current situation and what can be done:

  • Supply chain disruptions and policy reversals
  • Rethinking renewables as a near-term replacement

What the future holds in terms of global energy security and emissions reduction:

  • Near-term European challenges
  • Long-term reliability of energy suppliers
