SUMMARY:The STIR: Structural Barriers and Challenges Facing Minority Owned Businesses
DESCRIPTION:Entrepreneurship and steady economic growth have been the backbone of prosperity in the US and UK. However not all segments of society have equitable access to funding or the opportunity to benefit from economic growth. The global pandemic further exposed the vulnerability of minority owned businesses that make up 29% of all US firms according to the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin our panel of experts as we discuss key factors in starting and sustaining a business\, as well as how SME can participate in the green transition. \n\n\n\n\n\nStarting and Sustaining a Business \n\nTraditionally most startups are funded primarily from savings and equity investments\, and secondarily from bank loans. For minority led business the secondary source is credit cards that typically have higher cost and are designed for short term liquidity and not funding long-term growth.\nA study by J.P Morgan found that only 6% of small businesses in a majority Black communities and 11% of small businesses in majority-Latinx communities have more than 14 days of emergency cash\, compared to 65% in majority white communities.\n\n  \nParticipation in the Green Transition \n\nSmall and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent approximately 90% of the world’s businesses and 99% of businesses in the U.S\, and according to OECD estimates contribute to 60-70 percent of total industrial pollution.\nAccording to a recent SME Climate Hub survey\, only 60% of SME respondents have an emission reduction plan in place with over 60% lacking skills and knowledge and nearly 70% lacking the necessary funding.\nReducing the impact of SME’s on the environment is the key success factor in greening the economy while we ensure that minority led businesses are included in the wave of the green transition.\n\n  \nKey questions to be addressed by the panel include: \n\nHow to improve access to capital for minority owned businesses?\nHow can your organization improve your supplier diversity pipeline and what best practices can you adopt to be more inclusive of minority owned businesses?\nFor larger corporations\, how can your corporate strategies align to help support energy transition for small businesses in your ecosystem? Vendor selection is not only about capital and convenience but can serve to achieve larger sustainability goals. How can your company set up a carbon assessment as part of your vendor selection process? For small and medium size businesses\, how to effectively measure your emissions and help meet your emission reduction goals in cost effective ways?\n\n\n\n.

SUMMARY:The Quest For Perfect Data is a Fool's Errand
DESCRIPTION:Organizations are not getting more efficient despite gathering more and more data. \nBABC Texas members Garner and BJSS believe there are two core reasons why efficiency is not improving. \n1. The misguided myth that only perfect data will reveal the truth. Businesses are searching under couch cushions for every byte of data\, polishing red herrings and expecting to catch white whales. \n2. The mischaracterization of organizations as machines. In reality\, every business unit operates as a human community. \nJoin Mark Childerson\, Product Manager\, Garner and Mitch Hollander\, Data Engineer\, BJSS as they provide a better understanding of how to operate a data-driven community — or at least how not to. \nRegister via the link below. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Creating Long-Term Impact and Driving Business Transformation through Diverse\, Ethical & Sustainable Supply Chains
DESCRIPTION:upply chains are the core of organization-wide sustainability goals and commitments – in many cases\, more than 90% of an organization’s greenhouse gas emissions\, and 50% – 70% of operating costs are attributable to supply chains. With the SEC’s proposed climate rules\, companies will have to improve their ESG reporting (including Scope 1\, 2 & 3) and consider the social impact a diverse and innovative supply chain can have on growth and economic strength as well as the opportunities it can create for communities. \nWhilst it is crucial to work with sustainable suppliers\, it is important for companies to be accountable for seeking out and implementing diverse and innovative supply chains which generates opportunities to drive growth\, ensures competitive access\, represents client and customer viewpoints and creates economic impact for their own business and for the diverse suppliers and community. \nBAB has brought together an expert panel to explore the key areas that influence a diverse and impactful supply chain and what companies can do to ensure long-term growth\, develop collaborative partnerships and improve reporting. \nIn this discussion the panel will explore \n\nDiversity – How do we drive large-scale change and develop collaborative partnerships that will address complex societal and environmental issues whilst identifying material risks and unlocking opportunities for improvements via business operations and upstream/downstream activities.\nReporting – what can companies implement to advance their scope 3 reporting\, improve transparency to measure progress and maximize value.\nInvestment – what cutting-edge technologies are investors are focusing on to improve supply chain resilience.\n\n  \nBAB’s Corporate Citizenship & Sustainability Series is a bespoke series of roundtables and business briefings covering critical Environmental\, Societal and Governance (ESG) issues in business and private sector-led initiatives in support of COP\, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
